Mythology & Lore

The Rock and the Pyre

Broteas was a son of Tantalus, who ruled from Mount Sipylus in Lydia. He carved the oldest image of the Mother of the Gods into the rock of Coddinus, a massive figure cut into the cliff face of the mountain. But he refused to give Artemis her due honor. The goddess drove him mad. Convinced his flesh could not burn, he walked onto a pyre and died in the flames.
