Ixion lay with Nephele, a cloud shaped like Hera by Zeus, and their union produced Centaurus. Centaurus mated with the Magnesian mares on Mount Pelion, begetting the race of Centaurs.
The Centaurs attacked the Lapiths at Pirithous's wedding to Hippodamia, driven to frenzy by wine and attempting to carry off the women. Theseus fought alongside his friend Pirithous and the Lapiths to drive them off in the bloody Centauromachy.
Heracles fought the Centaurs at Pholus's cave when they were driven mad by the scent of opened wine. He drove them off with arrows poisoned by Hydra blood, accidentally wounding Chiron in the process.
The Centaurs overwhelmed Caeneus during the Centauromachy, burying the invulnerable warrior under a pile of rocks and tree trunks when no blade could pierce his skin.
