Mythology & Lore
At Dodona
At Dodona in Epirus, Dione was worshipped alongside Zeus at what Herodotus calls the oldest oracle in Greece. Her name is the feminine form of his. While Hera held the title of Zeus's wife across the Greek world, at Dodona that role belonged to Dione. Priestesses called the Peleiades read the future in the rustling of a sacred oak and the movement of doves.
Aphrodite's Mother
In the Iliad, Dione is Aphrodite's mother by Zeus. When Diomedes wounded Aphrodite on the battlefield at Troy, the goddess fled to Olympus and sank into her mother's lap. Dione wiped the ichor from her daughter's wrist and told her she was not the first. Ares had been sealed in a bronze jar by the Aloadae. Hera had taken one of Heracles's arrows. Mortals who struck at gods, Dione said, did not live long.
