Description

When the winged Boreads chased the Harpies across the sky with drawn swords, it was Iris — rainbow goddess and the Harpies' own sister — who appeared and swore by the Styx to save them. All three were daughters of the Oceanid Electra and the sea god Thaumas.

Mythology & Lore

In the Meadow with Persephone

Electra was an Oceanid — one of the three thousand daughters of Oceanus and Tethys. The Homeric Hymn to Demeter names her among the nymphs who were gathering flowers with Persephone in a meadow when Hades seized the girl. She was there when a narcissus bloomed impossibly large, when the earth cracked open, and when the lord of the dead rose in his golden chariot and carried Demeter's daughter beneath the ground.

Mother of Rainbow and Storm

Electra married Thaumas, a sea god and son of Pontus and Gaia, and their children bridged sea and sky.

Iris, the rainbow goddess, was the swift messenger who raced on golden wings between Olympus and earth. In the Iliad she stirs the winds at Patroclus's funeral pyre when no breeze will light the wood and leads old Priam through the Greek camp in the dead of night to ransom Hector's body from Achilles.

The Harpies — Aello and Ocypete, "Storm-Swift" and "Swift-Wing" — were winged storm spirits who snatched mortals and fouled food at the gods' command. They plagued the blind prophet Phineus, seizing or spoiling every meal set before him. When the Argonauts landed on his shore, the winged Boreads Zetes and Calais chased the Harpies across the sky with drawn swords. It was Iris, their own sister, who saved them — she swore by the Styx that the Harpies would never return to Phineus, and the Boreads sheathed their swords.

In Virgil's Aeneid, a third Harpy, Celaeno, confronted Aeneas when his Trojans slaughtered cattle on the Strophades. She fouled their feast and prophesied that the Trojans would know such hunger they would gnaw their own tables before their city was founded.
