  Phaethon and the Heliades were children of Helios and the Oceanid Clymene. After Phaethon's fatal ride of the sun chariot, his sisters the Heliades wept so long that the gods transformed them into poplar trees.

  In Ovid's Metamorphoses, Cycnus and the Heliades mourned Phaethon together on the banks of the Eridanus. Both were transformed by grief — Cycnus into a swan and the Heliades into poplar trees.

• Eridanus

  The Heliades mourned their brother Phaethon on the banks of the Eridanus, weeping until they took root as poplar trees. Their amber tears fell into the river's waters.

• Phaethon

  The Heliades, sisters of Phaethon, mourned his death on the banks of the Eridanus until the gods transformed them into poplar trees. Their tears became drops of amber.
