About Horkos

Family
  • Eris(parent),Limos(sibling)

Eris bore a brood of baleful spirits without a father: Horkos who punishes the forsworn, Limos who wastes the flesh with famine, and many other personifications of human suffering catalogued in Hesiod's Theogony.

Associated with
  • In Hesiod's Theogony, Iris fetches water from the River Styx whenever a god must swear an oath. Horkos presides over the oath that follows, making Iris the ritual intermediary and Horkos the binding enforcer.

  • Pistis and Horkos are conceptually linked personifications: Pistis embodies the trust between parties, while Horkos represents the sacred oath that formalizes and enforces that trust.

  • The most solemn divine oath is sworn upon Styx, and Horkos enforces its binding power. In Hesiod's Theogony, gods who swear falsely by Styx face nine years of exile from Olympus, a punishment Horkos ensures is carried out.

  • Horkos and Thanatos are both dark personifications in Hesiod's Theogony, descended from Nyx. Where Thanatos is the inescapable end of mortal life, Horkos is the inescapable consequence of broken vows.

  • Even Zeus is bound by oaths that Horkos enforces. In Hesiod's Theogony, Zeus cannot break a vow sworn on Styx water without suffering punishment, demonstrating that Horkos's power constrains even the king of the gods.
