Mythology & Lore
The Sleepless Guardian
Ladon was a dragon of one hundred heads who never slept. Each head spoke with a different voice, each maintained eternal vigilance — no moment passed when all his eyes were closed. Hera set him in the Garden of the Hesperides at the western edge of the world to guard the golden apples, Gaia's wedding gift to Hera when she married Zeus. The apples grew on a single tree tended by the Hesperides, daughters of Atlas, and conferred immortality on those who ate them. Apollodorus names Typhon and Echidna as Ladon's parents; Hesiod says Phorcys and Ceto.
The Eleventh Labor
Eurystheus commanded Heracles to bring back the golden apples as his Eleventh Labor. Heracles went to the garden and shot Ladon with arrows tipped in the Hydra's venom. The hundred heads fell silent one by one — the sleepless guardian who had never known a moment's rest found his eternal vigil ended by poison.
When the Argonauts passed through the garden the day after, they found Ladon still coiled around the trunk of the apple tree, his hundred heads fallen lifeless, flies swarming his wounds. Only the tip of his tail still twitched. The Hesperides wailed at the strangers' approach and dissolved into earth — Hespere became a poplar, Aigle a sacred willow.
In an alternative tradition, Heracles never entered the garden at all. He convinced Atlas to retrieve the apples while he held up the sky in Atlas's place, then tricked Atlas into taking the burden back.
Among the Stars
When Ladon died, Hera grieved for her faithful guardian and placed him among the stars as the constellation Draco, which coils around the celestial pole. The hundred-headed dragon who never slept now circles endlessly around the North Star, still keeping watch, though there is nothing left for him to guard.
