  In Orphic tradition, souls who drink from Mnemosyne's spring in the underworld retain their memories and are granted passage to Elysium, escaping the cycle of reincarnation through the preservation of knowledge.

• Lethe

  In Orphic eschatology, the springs of Mnemosyne and Lethe stand as cosmic opposites in the underworld. Souls who drink from Lethe forget their past lives; those who choose Mnemosyne's waters retain memory and may escape the cycle of rebirth.

• Titanomachy

  Mnemosyne was among the Titans who avoided imprisonment in Tartarus after the Titanomachy. She retained her honored place in the cosmos, and Zeus later chose her as the mother of the nine Muses.

• Trophonius

  At the oracle of Trophonius at Lebadea, visitors drank from the spring of Mnemosyne before descending into the underground chamber. Pausanias describes the ritual: memory's waters prepared the consultant to retain the prophetic visions received below.

• Underworld

  Mnemosyne's spring flows in the underworld according to Orphic gold tablets. Initiates were instructed to bypass the spring of Lethe and drink from Mnemosyne's cool waters to preserve their memories after death.
