Mythology & Lore
Daughter of Chiron
Ocyrhoe was born beside a rushing stream on Mount Pelion, daughter of the centaur Chiron and the nymph Chariclo — her name means "swift-flowing," taken from the water at her birth. She grew up in her father's cave, surrounded by the heroes he tutored in medicine and the hunt, but she had a gift none of them shared. Her prophecies came unbidden and poured out with a force that no one, least of all Ocyrhoe herself, could control.
The Prophecy Over Asclepius
When Apollo brought his infant son Asclepius to Chiron's cave after the boy's mother Coronis had died on a pyre, Ocyrhoe looked at the baby and was seized by prophetic frenzy. She addressed the child directly: he would grow to heal all mankind, gain the power to raise the dead, and Zeus would strike him down with a thunderbolt for it. Her frenzy deepened. She turned to her father and prophesied his fate — that Chiron would suffer an incurable wound from Heracles's poisoned arrow and beg for death, surrendering his immortality to free Prometheus. She tried to say more, but tears choked her. She felt her own shape beginning to slip.
The Mare on the Mountain
The change had already begun. Grass looked appetizing. She longed to run in open fields. Her hands hardened into hooves and her hair flowed into a mane. She reached for her father, but when she opened her mouth only a whinny came out. Chiron cried to Apollo for help, but even the god of prophecy could not undo what the other gods had decreed. Ocyrhoe had spoken what she should not have known, and there was no taking it back. She became a mare on the slopes of Pelion, grazing where she had once spoken with a human voice.
Every prophecy she uttered came true. Asclepius did heal and raise the dead; Zeus did strike him down; Chiron did surrender his immortality in agony.
