Description

One of the three Oneiroi and son of Hypnos, Phobetor shaped dreams of beasts and monsters — wolves at the sleeper's heels, serpents coiling in darkness. The gods called him Icelus, 'likeness,' for his power to assume any animal form. Mortals knew him only as the Frightener.

Mythology & Lore

The Frightener

Phobetor was one of the thousand sons of Hypnos and a member of the triad of principal Oneiroi who governed the categories of dream imagery. His name means "frightening," and he shaped nightmares featuring beasts and monsters — when a sleeper dreamed of wolves at the throat or serpents coiling underfoot, Phobetor had crafted the vision. The gods called him Icelus, "likeness" or "semblance," a name that emphasized his gift for assuming the form of any creature with uncanny accuracy. His brothers Morpheus and Phantasos completed the triad: Morpheus appeared as humans, Phantasos as inanimate things like rock and water.

The Oneiroi dwelt with their father in a dark palace near the borders of the world, where poppies grew in abundance and the only sound was the murmur of the river Lethe. From this cavern a thousand dream-spirits emerged each night to visit mortals, passing through two gates — true dreams through a gate of horn, false dreams through a gate of ivory.

The Mission to Alcyone

In Ovid's account of the Oneiroi at work, Hera dispatched the goddess Iris to the House of Sleep to request a dream for the grieving queen Alcyone, whose husband Ceyx had drowned at sea. Iris picked her way carefully through the sleeping dream-spirits to find the one she needed, the cavern so still that even her soft footsteps seemed too loud. Morpheus was chosen because the task required a human likeness — he would appear to Alcyone in the form of her drowned husband. But the passage that names Phobetor also defines his function: he was the dream-shaper summoned when visions of beasts and monsters were needed, the maker of nightmares that woke mortals in terror and left them reaching for a light that would not come.
