Member of
  • The elder gods who ruled during the Golden Age before being overthrown by the Olympians, including the twelve first-generation Titans born to Ouranos and Gaia and second-generation members Pallas and Perses.

Associated with
  • In Aeschylus's Eumenides, Phoebe transferred the Oracle of Delphi to her grandson Apollo as a birthday gift. Apollo's epithet 'Phoebus' ('the bright one') derives directly from her name.

  • Phoebe's daughter Asteria flung herself into the sea to escape Zeus's advances and transformed into the island of Delos, which later served as the birthplace of Phoebe's grandchildren Apollo and Artemis.

  • In the Eumenides, Aeschylus recounts that Phoebe received the oracle at Delphi from Themis and gave it as a birthday gift to her grandson Apollo.

  • Through her daughter Leto, Phoebe became grandmother of Apollo and Artemis. Leto's divine parentage from the Titans Coeus and Phoebe was essential to establishing her children's status among the Olympians.

  • In Aeschylus's Eumenides, Themis held the Oracle of Delphi after Gaia and passed it to her sister Phoebe, who in turn gave it to Apollo. This succession legitimized Apollo's prophetic authority.
