Mythology & Lore
The Shattered Monster
Rahab resisted God at creation and was broken. Job declares: "By his power he stilled the sea; by his understanding he shattered Rahab." Psalm 89: "You crushed Rahab like a carcass; you scattered your enemies with your mighty arm." Isaiah: "Was it not you who cut Rahab in pieces, who pierced the dragon?"
The name means "the arrogant one." Rahab appears only in these fragments, never in the extended descriptions given to Leviathan. Job 9:13 mentions "the helpers of Rahab" who bowed in submission. Not just the monster but every force aligned with it went down.
Rahab and Egypt
Isaiah 30:7 calls Egypt "Rahab who sits still," giving the monster's name to a nation. Psalm 87:4 lists "Rahab" among the nations alongside Babylon.
Isaiah made the connection explicit. In a single passage he moved from the primordial killing to the Exodus: "Was it not you who cut Rahab in pieces, who pierced the dragon? Was it not you who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made the depths of the sea a way for the redeemed to pass over?" The God who broke the sea monster at creation broke Egypt at the Red Sea.
