Astika, son of a Naga mother, saved the serpent race by persuading King Janamejaya to halt the Sarpa Satra. The Nagas revere him as their deliverer from annihilation.
Vasuki, foreseeing the doom of Janamejaya's serpent sacrifice, gave his sister Jaratkaru in marriage to the sage of the same name so that their son Astika might be born to halt the fire and save the Nagas from annihilation.
