Mythology & Lore

The Disrobing

Dushasana was the second eldest of the hundred Kaurava brothers and Duryodhana's enforcer. After Yudhishthira lost everything in the rigged dice game, including Draupadi, Duryodhana ordered Dushasana to bring her. He seized Draupadi by her hair and hauled her before the court. She was menstruating, wearing a single garment.

Duryodhana commanded that she be stripped. Dushasana began pulling at her sari. Draupadi called to Krishna, who caused the cloth to become endless. Dushasana pulled and pulled but never reached the end. He collapsed in exhaustion, surrounded by a mountain of silk.

Bhima rose and swore before the entire court that he would tear open Dushasana's chest and drink his blood. Draupadi left her hair unbound, vowing not to tie it until it was washed in that blood.

Death at Kurukshetra

On the sixteenth day of the war, Bhima found Dushasana on the field. He smashed his chariot and dragged him to the ground. He tore Dushasana's arm from its socket, opened his chest, and drank. Then he smeared the blood on Draupadi's hair.
