Mythology & Lore
Birth in the Forest
Ghatotkacha was born from the union of Bhima and the rakshasi Hidimbi during the Pandavas' forest exile. His name means "bald as a pot." As a half-rakshasa, he grew to adulthood almost immediately, inheriting his father's strength and his mother's powers: the ability to shift his size at will and grow stronger in darkness. He was raised by Hidimbi but pledged to answer his father's summons whenever called.
The Night Terror
Ghatotkacha answered that summons when the war began. On the fourteenth night, he expanded to mountainous size and unleashed havoc on the Kaurava forces, hurling boulders and conjuring illusions in the darkness. The Kaurava army broke. Soldiers fled a foe they could not see.
The Shakti Weapon
Duryodhana begged Karna to stop him. Karna possessed the Shakti, a divine javelin from Indra that could kill any being but could be used only once. He had been saving it for Arjuna. With Ghatotkacha destroying his army, he had no choice. Karna hurled the Shakti. Ghatotkacha fell. In his last moment, he expanded his body to enormous size and crushed thousands of Kaurava soldiers beneath him.
When word reached the Pandava camp, Krishna alone smiled. The weapon meant for Arjuna was spent.
