Mythology & Lore
The Blood Boon
Raktabija, whose name means "blood-seed," was an Asura general who had obtained a devastating boon: whenever a drop of his blood fell to the earth, a perfect duplicate of himself would spring up, fully armed and equally powerful. Every wound inflicted upon him only multiplied his numbers. He served as a commander in the armies of the Asura brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha during their war against the gods.
The War Against the Goddess
When Shumbha and Nishumbha conquered heaven and drove the Devas into exile, the gods pooled their divine energies to create the warrior goddess Durga. She annihilated the Asura armies with devastating power, slaying generals and demon hordes alike. But when she engaged Raktabija, her attacks proved counterproductive. Every slash of her sword, every strike of her trident sent blood spattering across the battlefield, and from each drop a new Raktabija arose. Within moments, thousands of identical demons swarmed the field.
Kali's Solution
As the situation grew desperate, the terrible goddess Kali emerged from Durga's furrowed brow: dark-skinned, emaciated, with a lolling tongue and a garland of skulls. While Durga and the Matrikas continued to wound Raktabija, Kali spread her enormous tongue across the battlefield and drank every drop of blood before it could touch the ground. She devoured the duplicate demons as they formed, swallowing them whole. Deprived of his regenerative power, Raktabija was finally struck down, and Kali drank the last of his blood.
