Mythology & Lore
Birth and Parentage
Sahadeva was the youngest of the five Pandava brothers, born alongside his twin Nakula to Queen Madri through the invocation of the twin Ashvins, the divine horsemen and physicians of the gods. When their father Pandu died and Madri immolated herself on his pyre, the infant twins were raised by Kunti alongside her own three sons. During the Pandavas' year in disguise at King Virata's court, Sahadeva posed as a cowherd named Tantipala, tending the royal cattle with such expertise that Virata praised him without recognizing the prince beneath the disguise.
The Silent Prophet
Sahadeva possessed knowledge of astrology, prophecy, and the science of omens. Tradition holds that he could foresee the future with perfect clarity, including the catastrophe of the Kurukshetra War, but was bound by a curse that prevented him from revealing his knowledge unsolicited. He knew the war would come and how it would end, yet could say nothing until asked. No one thought to ask.
The Slaying of Shakuni
Sahadeva had sworn to slay Shakuni personally, the Gandhara prince whose cunning had orchestrated the fraudulent dice game that sent the Pandavas into exile and led to the humiliation of Draupadi. On the eighteenth day of the Kurukshetra War, Sahadeva found Shakuni on the battlefield and fulfilled his vow, striking him down in combat.
