Description

The least sung of four divine brothers, Shatrughna waited fourteen years in Ayodhya while Rama wandered in exile. His one independent command was to slay the demon Lavanasura. He reached the fortress before the demon could retrieve his invincible spear and founded Mathura on the spot.

Mythology & Lore

The Fourth Brother

Shatrughna was the youngest of Dasharatha's four sons, born to Queen Sumitra along with his twin Lakshmana after the Putrakameshti fire sacrifice. While Lakshmana attached himself to Rama, Shatrughna became Bharata's constant companion.

Fourteen Years

When Rama was banished to the forest through Kaikeyi's demands, Shatrughna stayed in Ayodhya with Bharata. Bharata refused the throne and placed Rama's sandals on it instead, governing from the nearby town of Nandigrama. Shatrughna served beside him through all fourteen years, waiting for a brother who might never return.

Lavanasura

After Rama's coronation, he sent Shatrughna to deal with the demon Lavanasura, son of Madhu, who terrorized the region of Madhuvana. Lavanasura possessed an invincible spear given to him by Shiva. Shatrughna reached Madhuvana while the demon was away from his fortress and challenged him before he could retrieve the weapon. Without the spear, Lavanasura fell to Shatrughna's celestial arrows. On the site of the demon's former domain, Shatrughna founded the city of Mathura and ruled it as its first king.
