About Skanda

Family
  • Parvati(parent),Shiva(parent),Ashokasundari(sibling),Ganesha(sibling)Marriage · Miraculous

Shiva and Parvati's divine household includes Ganesha, whom Parvati shaped from turmeric paste and Shiva restored with an elephant head, Skanda, born from Shiva's fiery seed to lead the gods against the demon Taraka, and Ashokasundari, born from the ashoka tree to ease Parvati's loneliness.

  • Agni(parent),Svaha(parent)Marriage · Miraculous

Svaha is the devoted wife of Agni. In several Puranic accounts, Skanda (Kartikeya) was born from Agni's seed, with Svaha playing a central role in his conception by assuming the forms of the wives of the Saptarishis.

The Mahabharata (Vana Parva 223-232) names Agni and Svaha as Skanda's parents, while the Shiva Purana and Kumarasambhava attribute his birth to Shiva and Parvati. Both traditions are well-attested.

  • Ganga(parent),Shiva(parent)Consort · Miraculous

Shiva's fiery seed, too potent for any vessel, passed through Agni into the waters of Ganga, who carried it until depositing the embryo in the Saravana reeds, where Skanda was born — hence his epithet Gangeya, son of Ganga.

Mahabharata 3.213-221 names Ganga as Skanda's mother via Agni's transfer of Shiva's seed. Later Puranic traditions (Shiva Purana, Kumara Sambhava) attribute his parentage to Shiva and Parvati directly.

  • Devasena(spouse)Marriage

Indra gave Devasena in marriage to Skanda after his victory over the demon armies. Devasena, the personification of the divine armies, became his celestial consort alongside the earthly Valli.

  • Krittikas(parent)Adopted

The six Krittikas nursed the infant Skanda, each suckling one of his six forms. Their fostering gave him the name Kartikeya, meaning son of the Krittikas.

  • Valli(spouse)Marriage

In South Indian tradition, Skanda as Murugan pursued and won Valli, a tribal maiden guarding millet fields. She became one of his two consorts, representing earthly devotion complementing Devasena's celestial nature.

Slew
  • Skanda slew the lion-faced demon Simhamukha during the war at Tiruchendur, defeating the youngest of the three asura brothers alongside Tarakasura and Surapadman.

  • Skanda killed Surapadman at Tiruchendur, splitting the demon's body into a peacock that became his mount and a rooster that became his flag emblem.

  • Skanda slew the demon Taraka with his vel spear, fulfilling the purpose of his birth. Taraka had terrorized the three worlds with a boon that only a son of Shiva could kill him.

Associated with
  • Narada provoked a contest between Ganesha and Skanda over who could circle the world first. Skanda flew around the earth on his peacock, but Ganesha simply walked around his parents Shiva and Parvati, declaring them his entire world, and was judged the winner.

  • Skanda imprisoned Brahma for being unable to explain the meaning of the sacred syllable Om, seizing the creator's authority and temporarily assuming the role of cosmic teacher in Brahma's place.

  • Indra yielded command of the divine armies to Skanda after the young god proved his martial supremacy by destroying Tarakasura, making Skanda the eternal general of the devas.

  • In the Swaminatha episode, Skanda arrested Brahma for failing to explain the meaning of the sacred syllable Om, then taught the pranava mantra to his own father Shiva, becoming the guru of his lord.

  • The Vel is the divine spear wielded by Skanda, given to him by Parvati as a manifestation of Shakti's power before his battle against Tarakasura.
