Description
Three flying cities of gold, silver, and iron, each ruled by one of Tarakasura's sons, could only be destroyed when all three aligned, and only by a single arrow. The gods built Shiva a chariot from the earth itself, with the sun and moon as wheels, and he waited for the moment to fire that impossible shot.
Mythology & Lore
Origins and the Boon
After Kartikeya slew the asura Tarakasura, the demon's three sons, Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali, undertook severe penances to avenge their father. Their austerities forced Brahma to appear and offer each a boon. The brothers asked for immortality, but Brahma refused that absolute gift. They devised a cunning alternative: their three cities could only be destroyed when all three aligned in a single line, and only by a single arrow that could pierce all three at once.
The Three Flying Cities
Brahma commissioned the divine architect Maya Danava to build the three fortresses: a city of gold in heaven, a city of silver in the sky, and a city of iron on earth. The three could move freely through the air. From their aerial strongholds, the brothers conquered the three worlds and drove the gods from their celestial seats. Their power corrupted them. They grew tyrannical.
The Destruction by Tripurantaka
The gods appealed to Shiva. They fashioned him a chariot from the earth itself, with the sun and moon for its wheels. Vishnu became the arrow. Vasuki became the bowstring. Brahma drove. Shiva waited for the precise moment when the three cities aligned. When they converged into a single line, he released one arrow. It pierced all three cities and reduced them to ash.
