Varaha- Hindu GodDeity · Beast"The Boar"
Also known as: Varāha and वराह
Description
He emerged from Brahma's nostril no larger than a thumb, then swelled until his body filled the sky. The cosmic boar dove into the primordial waters, battled Hiranyaksha for a thousand celestial years, and rose with the drowned earth balanced gently on his tusks.
Mythology & Lore
The Crisis
At the dawn of a new cosmic cycle, the demon Hiranyaksha seized the earth goddess Bhudevi and dragged her to the bottom of the primordial waters. With the Earth submerged, creation was incomplete. The gods appealed to Vishnu, who assumed the form of an enormous boar.
The Descent and Battle
Varaha emerged from Brahma's nostril, tiny at first, then growing to cosmic proportions until he filled the sky. His eyes blazed like the sun and moon, his tusks gleamed white as mountains. The divine boar plunged into the primordial waters, descending through realms of darkness to find where Hiranyaksha had hidden with his prize. The demon challenged Varaha to combat, mocking the boar form and hurling his mace. The battle raged for a thousand celestial years, shaking the foundations of the cosmos, until Varaha struck Hiranyaksha at the base of his ear and killed him.
Rescue and Restoration
With Hiranyaksha slain, Varaha lifted Bhudevi upon his tusks and carried her upward through the waters. Rising from the ocean, the cosmic boar placed the Earth in her proper position. In the Bhagavata Purana, Varaha and Bhudevi become consorts, and the Earth remains under the boar avatar's protection.
