Mythology & Lore
Nandini
Vasishtha, one of the seven primordial sages, served as royal priest to the Solar Dynasty of Ayodhya. He possessed the wish-fulfilling cow Nandini, and the warrior-king Vishvamitra wanted her.
Vishvamitra sent his army to seize the cow. Nandini produced warriors from her body that routed the king's entire force. Humiliated, Vishvamitra renounced his kingdom and spent lifetimes in austerities to surpass Vasishtha in spiritual power. The feud lasted generations. In the end, it was Vasishtha who acknowledged Vishvamitra's transformation, granting him the title of Brahmarishi. The feud ended through recognition, not force.
The Fire for Sons
When King Dasharatha despaired of having no heir, Vasishtha guided him through the Putrakameshti yajna. From the sacrificial fire emerged a divine being carrying a golden vessel of sacred payasam, which Dasharatha's three queens shared. From their portions came Rama and his three brothers. Vasishtha served as guru to all four, instructing them in dharma and the duties of kingship.
