  Vasuki reigns as king of the Nagas in the jeweled halls of Nagaloka beneath the earth, ruling over all serpent-kind with the authority granted by Brahma.

  The Nagas are a race of divine serpent beings. Shesha (Ananta) and Vasuki are the greatest among them — Shesha serves as Vishnu's cosmic couch, Vasuki as the churning rope at the Ocean of Milk and the serpent adorning Shiva's neck.

  Vasuki, king of the nagas, was wrapped around Mount Mandara as the churning rope of the Samudra Manthan, pulled back and forth by the devas and asuras until the serpent's venom-laced breath sickened the demons who gripped his head.

• Astika

  Vasuki, foreseeing the doom of Janamejaya's serpent sacrifice, gave his sister Jaratkaru in marriage to the sage of the same name so that their son Astika might be born to halt the fire and save the Nagas from annihilation.

• Shiva

  Vasuki, king of the nagas, coils around Shiva's neck as a living garland, his serpentine body an emblem of Shiva's mastery over fear and death.
