Description

Virgin goddess tricked into pregnancy by Coniraya's magic fruit disguised as a lucuma. Fleeing in shame when she discovered the father's identity, she threw herself into the sea with her child and became rocks off the coast.

Mythology & Lore

The Virgin Goddess

Cavillaca was a goddess of exceptional beauty who would have none of the gods who desired her. Though every male deity in the Huarochirí pantheon sought her favor, she refused them all, devoted to her chastity and answerable to none. This drew the attention of Coniraya Viracocha, who could not accept her rejection.

The Lucuma Trick

Unable to approach Cavillaca directly, Coniraya transformed his essence into a lucuma fruit and placed it in a tree where she often sat weaving. When she ate the fruit, she became pregnant, a virgin goddess with child and no knowledge of how it had happened. She had guarded her status with unfailing resolve, and now it had been taken from her by a trick she could not have seen or prevented.

The Assembly of Gods

When her child was born, Cavillaca summoned all the gods and commanded them to appear before her so the infant might reveal its parentage. Coniraya came disguised as a ragged, dirty beggar, hoping to hide among the gathering. But when the baby was set down, it crawled across the ground to the poorest figure in the assembly and embraced him. That she, who had refused the greatest gods, should bear the child of one who appeared so wretched was more than she could endure.

Flight to the Sea

Cavillaca seized her child and ran. She fled toward the coast with Coniraya pursuing, calling after her, pleading, revealing his true divine nature. She would not stop, would not turn. When she reached the shore at Pachacamac, she walked into the ocean with her baby, and both were transformed into the rocks that stand offshore to this day.
