Mythology & Lore
Birthplace of the Sun
Isla del Sol, in the southern waters of Lake Titicaca, was where Inti the sun god first rose into the sky to illuminate the world. The island's Sacred Rock, known as Titikala, marked the precise spot of this cosmic event. The island's sacred status predated the Inca by centuries: the Tiwanaku culture, which flourished nearby from roughly 200 to 1000 CE, already venerated it. Archaeological evidence reveals pre-Inca shrines and offering deposits spanning millennia.
The Pilgrimage Complex
The Inca built elaborate infrastructure on the island. Arriving pilgrims passed through a series of gateways and checkpoints, each requiring ritual purification before proceeding further toward the Sacred Rock. The Pilko Kayma temple complex served as both lodging and ceremonial center where priests conducted rites honoring Inti. At the northern end, the Chincana labyrinth housed priests who tended sacred fires. Only those who had undergone proper preparation were permitted to approach the Sacred Rock itself.
