Mythology & Lore

The Funeral of Ame-no-Wakahiko

The heavenly deities had dispatched Ame-no-Wakahiko to subdue the earthly realm, but he married Shitateruhime, Ajisukitakahikone's sister, and settled in the land for eight years without reporting back. When the heavenly deities sent a pheasant to inquire about his delay, Ame-no-Wakahiko shot it with the heavenly bow and arrows he had been given. The arrow passed through the pheasant and reached the High Plain of Heaven, where Takamimusubi recognized it and hurled it back. It struck Ame-no-Wakahiko in the chest as he lay sleeping. He died.

At the funeral, Ajisukitakahikone came to mourn his friend and brother-in-law. The two deities bore such a striking resemblance that the assembled mourners, including Ame-no-Wakahiko's parents and wife, mistook the living god for the dead one. They clung to him weeping, believing their loved one had returned to life.

Ajisukitakahikone was overcome with fury at being confused with a corpse. He drew his great sword, the Ōhakari, and slashed apart the mourning hut. The Kojiki records that the destroyed hut fell to earth and became Mount Moyama in Mino Province. Ajisukitakahikone flew away, his radiance blazing so brightly that it illuminated two hills and two valleys at once.

His sister Shitateruhime then sang a poem revealing his true identity, so that the mourners understood who had come and gone.
