Hōzō Bosatsu is the bodhisattva form of Amida before he attained Buddhahood. Over immeasurable ages of practice, Hōzō made forty-eight vows and accumulated the merit that created the Pure Land, ultimately becoming Amida Nyorai.

Hōzō Bosatsu heard Sejizaiō Butsu preach the dharma of two hundred and ten billion Buddha-lands, renounced his kingship, and made forty-eight great vows before the elder Buddha — pledging to create a realm where all suffering beings could find rebirth through faith alone.
