During the ukei oath trial with Amaterasu, Susanoo's sword Totsuka-no-Tsurugi was chewed and spat forth as three female kami — Tagorihime, Tagitsuhime, and Ichikishimahime — the Munakata goddesses whom he claimed as his daughters.
⚠ The Kojiki attributes the three goddesses to Susanoo as the owner of the sword, though Amaterasu performed the chewing. The Nihon Shoki offers variant attributions.
Through the honji suijaku system, Benzaiten was identified as the Buddhist true nature (honji) underlying the Shinto kami Ichikishimahime of the Munakata goddesses, merging their cults at Itsukushima and other sacred island shrines.
Itsukushima is the sacred island of Ichikishimahime, the Munakata sea goddess, whose shrine has stood on the island since antiquity. The island was considered so holy that no births or deaths were permitted on its soil.
