Mythology & Lore
The Descent from Takamagahara
After Ōkuninushi ceded the earthly realm to the heavenly gods, Amaterasu chose her grandson Ninigi to descend and take dominion. He did not go alone. Five deities were assigned to walk with him, each carrying something the new ruler would need.
Of the five, Ame-no-Uzume is the one the Kojiki lingers on. She had once danced half-naked before the sealed rock cave, stamping so hard the heavens shook, until Amaterasu's curiosity drew her back into the world. Now she brought that art down to earth. The others bore the norito prayers and purified offerings. Two were artisans who had forged treasures for the cave episode: the mirror Yata no Kagami and the jewel strand Yasakani no Magatama. With the sword Kusanagi, these became the Three Sacred Treasures of the imperial house.
The Kojiki names the five collectively as the Itsutomonoo. They descended through the floating bridge of heaven, parting the clouds at the peak of Takachiho, and what they carried became the ritual order of the Yamato court.
