Associated with
  • The Byōdō-in Phoenix Hall in Uji is the supreme architectural expression of Amida's Jōdo on earth. Viewed across its lotus pond, the hall's winged form evokes Amida's descent, while the interior recreates the Pure Land with sculpture, painting, and garden.

  • Hōnen devoted his life to teaching the path to Amida's Jōdo, founding Jōdo Shū to make the Pure Land accessible to all through the nembutsu alone.

  • Shinran taught that rebirth in the Jōdo comes entirely through other-power, not human effort. His Jōdo Shinshū made the Pure Land accessible even to those who considered themselves too sinful for salvation.
