Amaterasu bestowed the three Imperial Regalia upon Ninigi before his descent from Takamagahara: the Yata no Kagami (mirror), Kusanagi no Tsurugi (sword), and Yasakani no Magatama (jewel), commanding him to rule the earthly realm as she rules heaven.
Yamato Takeru left Kusanagi with Miyazu-hime before Mount Ibuki. After his death, she enshrined the sword at Atsuta Jingū, where it has remained as one of the Three Imperial Regalia.
Before his eastern campaign, Yamato Takeru visited Yamato-hime at Ise Jingū, where she gave him Kusanagi no Tsurugi and fire-striking tools for protection (Kojiki).
Susanoo presented Kusanagi to Amaterasu as a peace offering after finding it in Yamata no Orochi's tail. The gift partially healed the breach between the storm god and his sister the sun goddess (Kojiki).
Susanoo discovered Kusanagi no Tsurugi hidden in one of Yamata no Orochi's eight tails after slaying the serpent. He named it Ama-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi for the clouds that gathered above the beast (Kojiki).
Yamato Takeru wielded Kusanagi no Tsurugi during his eastern campaigns. The sword saved his life by cutting grass to escape a fire trap in Suruga Province, giving it the name Grass-Cutting Sword (Kojiki).
