Mount Ibuki is the birthplace of Shuten-dōji in the Ibuki Dōji tradition. The mountain harbored the lingering spirit of Yamata no Orochi, and Shuten-dōji was born there before eventually migrating to Mount Ōe.
In the Ibuki Dōji tradition, the lingering spirit of Yamata no Orochi took refuge in Mount Ibuki after its slaying by Susanoo. The mountain became a nexus of serpentine malice, and from that remnant evil Shuten-dōji was eventually born.
Yamato Takeru left Kusanagi no Tsurugi behind and climbed Mount Ibuki unarmed, where the mountain god appeared as a white boar and cursed him with sickness. He stumbled down the slopes and never recovered, dying at Nobono before his soul took flight as a white bird.
