When Izanagi plunged into the sea to wash away the pollution of Yomi, Sumiyoshi Myojin emerged from the waters — Sokotsutsu-no-o from the deep, Nakatsutsu-no-o from the middle currents, Uwatsutsu-no-o from the surface — born of the purification itself.
Hachiman, Kumano Gongen, and Sumiyoshi Myōjin disguised themselves as elderly men and provided Shuten-dōji with divine poisoned sake (shinben kidoku-shu) on the road to Mount Ōe, enabling Yorimitsu's band to subdue the demon king.
Sumiyoshi Myojin guided Empress Jingū across the sea during her invasion of the Korean kingdoms, calming the waves and granting fair winds. In gratitude, she established Sumiyoshi Taisha at the spot where the deities bade her enshrine them upon her return.
