Description

When heaven and earth first separated from chaos, three gods appeared in Takamagahara before anything else existed. Takamimusubi was the second. He arrived alone, without parent or consort, then concealed himself from the world he had just entered.

Mythology & Lore

Primordial Emergence

The Kojiki records that when heaven and earth first separated from chaos, Ame-no-Minakanushi materialized in Takamagahara, followed by Takamimusubi and then Kamimusubi. All three arose spontaneously as hitorigami, solitary deities without consorts or parents. After appearing, they concealed themselves from the visible world. His name means "High Generative Force," the celestial aspect of musubi, the creative power that brings things into existence.

The Heavenly Descent

Takamimusubi reappears in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki when the gods turn their attention to the earthly realm. In several accounts, it is Takamimusubi, rather than Amaterasu alone, who directs the pacification of the earth and commands the dispatch of envoys to Ōkuninushi. When Ninigi finally descends to rule, Takamimusubi acts as co-authority with Amaterasu in issuing the mandate.

His stake in the descent was personal. His daughter Takuhadachiji-hime had married Oshihomimi, Amaterasu's son, making Takamimusubi the maternal grandfather of Ninigi. His son Omoikane, the god of wisdom, had devised the plan to lure Amaterasu from the Heavenly Rock Cave. The primordial god who had concealed himself at the beginning of time had placed his children at every turning point of the story.
