Mythology & Lore
The Seventh Daughter Cast Away
A king and queen desperately wanted a son to inherit the throne. When the queen gave birth to her seventh consecutive daughter, the king ordered the infant sealed in a jade box and cast into the sea. The baby should have died. Supernatural forces carried her to shore, where a poor couple found the box and raised the girl as their own. She grew into a young woman unaware of her royal origins.
The Father's Mortal Illness
Years later, the king fell gravely ill with a disease no physician could cure. Shamans declared that only water from the Western Paradise, the realm of the dead, could heal him. The king summoned his six remaining daughters and begged them to undertake the journey. One by one, each refused. In despair, the king learned that his abandoned seventh daughter still lived. Messengers found Barigongju and brought her to the palace. Despite everything, she agreed to go alone.
The Journey Through the Underworld
Barigongju traveled through multiple realms of the dead, each guarded. She crossed rivers of blood and mountains of blades. At each threshold, spirits challenged her, demanding proof of her worthiness or seeking to turn her back. She did not fight. She appeased the guardians with proper rituals and offerings, passing where force would have failed.
The Guardian of the Healing Water
At last Barigongju reached the Western Paradise, where a figure called Mujangsung guarded the healing water. It was not freely given. Mujangsung demanded that she serve him for years: carrying water, chopping wood, tending fires. She served. He took her as his wife, and she bore him seven sons. Only after fulfilling every condition was she permitted to take the water and return to the world of the living.
The Return
Barigongju returned to find her father already dead. She applied the healing water to his body, and he was restored to life. The king, recognizing his daughter's virtue, offered her the kingdom. Barigongju refused. She chose instead to become the goddess who guides the souls of the dead, ensuring that others would have a companion for the journey she had traveled alone.
