Yuri took Chi-hui of the Han tribe as his second consort and favored her above Hwa-hui, a preference that fractured his household and inspired his lament.
When Hwa-hui left the court in grief over Yuri's favoritism toward Chi-hui, Yuri pursued her but could not persuade her to return. Resting beneath a tree where orioles flitted in pairs, he composed the Hwangjoga — one of the earliest Korean lyric poems — lamenting his loneliness.
