Kitsune, huli jing, and gumiho are the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean forms of the East Asian fox spirit, a shape-shifting supernatural being transmitted from Chinese fox mythology across the region, developing distinct traits in each tradition.
The yeowoo guseul is the gumiho's luminous fox bead, a pearl of concentrated spiritual power carried in its mouth. A human who steals and swallows the bead gains supernatural wisdom, while in tales of fox-lovers, the gumiho passes the bead to its beloved through a kiss.
