Yuri took Hwa-hui of the Gol-cheon tribe as his first consort, but neglected her after taking Chi-hui, driving Hwa-hui to abandon the court in grief.
When Hwa-hui left the court in grief over Yuri's favoritism toward Chi-hui, Yuri pursued her but could not persuade her to return. Resting beneath a tree where orioles flitted in pairs, he composed the Hwangjoga — one of the earliest Korean lyric poems — lamenting his loneliness.
