In the Munjeon Bonpuri, Namseon-bi and his wife Yeosan Buin — who later becomes Jowangsin — are the parents of Munshin, the eldest of seven sons who becomes the gate deity after avenging his mother against his father's treacherous concubine.
Each Lunar New Year, Jowangsin ascends from the kitchen hearth to Cheonjiwang's heavenly court, delivering her report on the household's conduct and determining its fortune for the coming year.
In the Jowang Bonpuri, Jowangsin's origin traces to a wife abandoned by her husband for a concubine — she followed him, was humiliated, and perished at the hearth, becoming the kitchen goddess, while her former husband's household fell under Seongju's domain.
