Mythology & Lore

The Guardian of the Cowshed

Sosin dwells in the cowshed and protects the domestic animals essential to traditional farming. In an agricultural society where cattle provided the labor for plowing and hauling, their loss to disease or accident could devastate a household. Sosin was one of the gasin, the household spirits that populated the Korean farmstead, and the cowshed was the spirit's domain.

A shelf or corner in the cowshed served as altar. Offerings of grain and rice cakes were placed there when cattle were purchased, when a cow gave birth, when an animal recovered from illness. The cowshed itself had to be kept clean and well-maintained, for a neglected space offended the spirit just as surely as a missed offering.

The Spirit's Favor

Spring was the critical time. Before sending the ox into the first furrow, a farmer placed fresh offerings in the cowshed and asked the spirit for a strong season. Autumn brought thanksgiving when the harvest was done and the cattle had finished their heavy labor. At the Lunar New Year, families placed offerings in the cowshed alongside their observances to every other household spirit, the animals and their guardian deserving the same attention as the kitchen hearth and the roof beam.
