Dangun was born on Taebaeksan where his father Hwanung had descended from heaven, and after fifteen hundred years of rule, he returned to Asadal on that same mountain to become a sansin — the peak framing both his mortal beginning and his immortal transformation.
Hwanin surveyed the mortal world below and chose Taebaeksan among three peaks as the place where his son could most broadly benefit humankind.
Hwanung descended from heaven to the summit of Taebaeksan with three thousand followers, alighting beneath a sacred sindansu tree and founding Sinsi, the City of God, from which he governed the 360 affairs of the human world.
Ungnyeo endured her cave trial of garlic and mugwort inside Taebaeksan, the sacred mountain where Hwanung had descended from heaven, and emerged from its darkness transformed from bear into woman.
