Mythology & Lore
The Seers' Betrayal
Pacam and his companion Xulu served as diviners in the court of Xibalba. The death lords relied on their counsel. But before allowing themselves to be killed, the Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque summoned the two seers and told them what was about to happen. After the twins' death, the lords would ask how to dispose of the remains. The twins gave specific instructions: advise the lords to grind the bones on a stone, as corn is ground, and scatter the powder into the river. Pacam and Xulu agreed to deliver this counsel as though it were their own divination.
The Counsel That Undid Xibalba
The twins burned in the stone oven. Hun Came and Vucub Came turned to their diviners. Pacam and Xulu advised grinding the bones to fine powder and casting the remains into the river, exactly as instructed. The death lords followed the advice without question.
Five days later, Hunahpu and Xbalanque reappeared as catfish swimming in the current. They resumed human form and began their final campaign of deception against the lords of death. The river had not destroyed them. It had brought them back.
