Description

Seven Caves, Seven Canyons. The K'iche' ancestors received their patron gods and the gift of fire at Tulan Zuyva, then departed into a sunless world, carrying their gods as sacred bundles on the migration toward the first dawn.

Mythology & Lore

The Seven Caves

Tulan Zuyva stood in darkness before the first dawn, a city of caves and canyons where the K'iche' ancestors gathered alongside the Tamub, the Ilocab, and other peoples. The Popol Vuh calls it Vukub Pek, Vukub Zivan: Seven Caves, Seven Canyons. No sun had yet risen. The world was cold.

It was here that the patron deities were distributed to each founding lineage. Tohil, the fire god, went to Balam-Quitze of the Kaweq. Awilix, goddess of the moon and the jaguar, went to Balam-Acab of the Nijaib. Each house departed Tulan Zuyva carrying the god that would anchor its authority.

The Gift of Fire

Tohil gave fire to the K'iche' ancestors, who shivered in the cold of the sunless world. The gift came with a demand: blood sacrifice. This was the covenant that would govern K'iche' worship. Other tribes at Tulan Zuyva, lacking fire, came to the K'iche' to beg for warmth. The debts they incurred would later be collected in blood.

Then the languages split. The K'iche' could no longer understand the speech of the Tamub or the Ilocab. The tribes separated, and the migration began.

The Departure

The founding ancestors led the K'iche' out of Tulan Zuyva carrying their patron gods as sacred bundles. They traveled through darkness and cold in a world that had not yet seen sunrise. At Chi Pixab in the Guatemalan highlands, the sun finally rose. Its light turned the patron gods to stone, and the age of direct divine speech ended. From that morning, the K'iche' worshipped through ritual what they had once carried alive.
