Description
When the gods held a banquet that Ereshkigal could not attend, it was Kakka, sukkal of the sky god Anu, who descended through the gates of the underworld to deliver the invitation, setting in motion the chain of events that would make Nergal co-ruler of the dead.
Mythology & Lore
Nergal and Ereshkigal
Kakka served as sukkal, vizier and messenger, of the sky god Anu. His defining myth appears in "Nergal and Ereshkigal." When the gods held a banquet in heaven, Ereshkigal, queen of the underworld, could not ascend to join them. Anu dispatched Kakka to carry the invitation down to her. He descended through the gates of the netherworld, delivered Anu's message, and returned with Ereshkigal's response: she would send her vizier Namtar to collect her portion.
When Namtar arrived at the banquet, every god rose in respect. Every god except Nergal, who remained seated. The insult reached Ereshkigal, and she demanded that Nergal be sent below to face punishment. Kakka's errand had set the whole story in motion.
The Message to Lahmu and Lahamu
In the Enuma Elish, Kakka appears under the name Gaga, serving as sukkal to Anshar, the primordial sky god. When Anshar learns that Tiamat is marshaling an army of monsters, he sends Gaga to the elder deities Lahmu and Lahamu with urgent news. Gaga descends to their dwelling and recites Anshar's words verbatim: Tiamat's preparations and the need for a champion. He repeated the message word for word. The words arrived as Anshar spoke them.
