Description

When Enki came for Uttu as he had come for her mother and grandmother, she was the first who had been warned. Ninhursag intervened after the union and planted Enki's seed in the earth. Eight plants grew instead of another goddess.

Mythology & Lore

The One Who Was Warned

In the paradise of Dilmun, Enki had worked his way through a chain of his own descendants. He lay with Ninhursag, who bore Ninsar after nine days. He pursued Ninsar, who bore Ninkurra. He pursued Ninkurra, who bore Uttu, goddess of weaving. Four generations.

Ninhursag warned Uttu: refuse Enki unless he brings proper gifts. When Enki came, he brought cucumbers and apples. Uttu accepted.

The Eight Plants

Ninhursag intervened. She removed Enki's seed from Uttu's body and planted it in the ground. Instead of another goddess, eight plants sprang from the earth.

Enki ate every one before Ninhursag could name them. She cursed him: eight organs sickened, one for each plant consumed. Then she vanished. Enki began to die. A fox negotiated her return, and for each ailing organ she created a healing deity.
