Description

Polished bronze discs hung across a shaman's costume, jingling with each movement to drive away dark forces. The toli reflected malevolent spirits back upon themselves and showed the shaman what ordinary eyes could never see.

Mythology & Lore

Mirror as Shield and Eye

A shaman's costume carried many toli: small bronze mirrors stitched to chest, back, and limbs. When the shaman moved, the mirrors struck against each other and rang. That sound alone drove lesser spirits away.

The mirrors faced outward. A malevolent spirit approaching a shaman in trance saw its own face thrown back at it, its power turned against itself. Multiple mirrors created overlapping barriers that entities could not easily cross. During an exorcism or a soul-retrieval, the toli stood between the shaman and whatever force had caused the harm.

But the mirrors also opened sight. A shaman gazing into a polished toli could see spirits invisible to ordinary vision and read patterns in the reflection that revealed past, present, and future. The most powerful toli were forged from bronze or iron-rich alloys and polished to a high sheen. With age and use, their surfaces darkened to a deep patina that practitioners held to be a sign of accumulated spiritual power.

Homes of Helping Spirits

A toli was not empty metal. Allied spirits lived inside it: an ancestor, an animal guide. A shaman called them forth when the work demanded it and let them return when it was done. A costume heavy with many toli meant many alliances.

The mirrors passed from teacher to student, from dead shamans to their successors. Diószegi, recording shamanic practice in the mid-twentieth century, found that inherited toli were valued above all others. The helping spirits of a deceased shaman could transfer with the physical mirror, so that a young practitioner who received an old toli gained not only the object but whatever had lived inside it for generations.
