Description

Twin monsters who killed with their gaze alone. Anyone who met their eyes fell dead on the spot. Born during the Separation of the Sexes, they roamed the Glittering World until Monster Slayer found a way to approach without meeting their gaze and struck them down.

Mythology & Lore

Born in Separation

The Binaye Ahani were born during the Separation of the Sexes, when men and women lived on opposite sides of a river and some women used unnatural means to conceive. Like the other Anaye, they came from these unions. They were twins, and they could kill with a look. No weapon, no speed, no strength mattered. If their eyes found you, you died.

Monster Slayer

Monster Slayer had killed Yéʼíiitsoh at the base of Mount Taylor and slain other Anaye across the Glittering World, but the Eye Killers could not be fought the same way. To approach them was to enter their sight, and their sight killed. Wind whispered in Monster Slayer's ear, warning him of where they waited.

Protected by the Sun's gifts and guided by Wind's counsel, Monster Slayer found a way to close the distance without meeting their gaze. In Washington Matthews' recording of the narrative, he struck them down before their eyes could find him. The land lost two more of its monsters, and the people could walk a little farther without fear of dying where they stood.
