Mythology & Lore
Whispering Salvation
When Monster Slayer and Born for Water set out for their father the Sun's house, they carried no map and knew nothing of the obstacles ahead. The Holy Wind traveled with them, whispering warnings before each trial. Before the crushing rocks closed, it told them to wait. Before the cutting reeds slashed, it told them where to step. Alongside Spider Woman and Big Fly, the Wind guided the twins to the Sun and back, and the campaign against the monsters that plagued the world could begin.
The Indwelling Voice
The Holy Wind is not only the breath that animates the body but the voice that speaks within the mind. As James McNeley documented, Níłchʼi entered the first humans through their ears and took up residence at the whorls of their fingertips and the crown of their heads. It never left. This indwelling wind is the source of thought, speech, and conscience. When a person weighs whether to speak truth or lie, whether to honor or violate a taboo, it is the Holy Wind counseling from within.
The whorls at the fingertips are its mark. No two people carry the same pattern, because no two people carry exactly the same wind.
The Holy Wind also moves through the world from four directions, each with distinct qualities: white wind from the east for clarity, dark wind from the north for completion. A change in wind direction is not weather alone. The wind within each person and the wind outside are the same wind.
