Guardian of Bifrost, the rainbow bridge to Asgard. Heimdall possesses incredible senses - he can hear grass grow and see for hundreds of miles. He will sound Gjallarhorn to announce Ragnarök.

Mythology & Lore

The Watchman of the Gods

Heimdall stands eternal guard at Bifrost, the rainbow bridge connecting Midgard to Asgard. He is called the "Whitest of the Gods," sometimes depicted with golden teeth that flash when he smiles. Unlike the other Æsir who feast and fight, Heimdall's existence is vigilance itself—he barely sleeps, ever watching for threats to the realm.

The Supernatural Senses

Heimdall possesses senses beyond any god or mortal. He can hear grass growing in the meadows and wool sprouting on sheep. His sight extends for hundreds of miles, equally sharp by day or night. Nothing escapes his awareness—which is why the gods chose him to guard the only bridge to their realm.

Son of Nine Mothers

Heimdall has the strangest parentage in Norse mythology: he was born to nine mothers simultaneously, all of them sisters (possibly the nine daughters of Ægir and Rán, the waves of the sea). This unusual birth may account for his extraordinary abilities and his nature as a liminal being, existing at the boundary between worlds.

Gjallarhorn

Heimdall keeps the great horn Gjallarhorn, whose blast can be heard throughout all Nine Worlds. He will blow it only once—at the beginning of Ragnarök, when the giants march on Asgard. Until then, it hangs silent, a promise of the doom to come. Some say it is hidden beneath Yggdrasil, near the Well of Wisdom.

Final Battle with Loki

Heimdall and Loki are destined enemies. At Ragnarök, when Loki leads the forces of chaos against Asgard, he and Heimdall will meet in single combat. The watchman and the trickster will fight until both fall, each slaying the other—order and chaos destroying one another at the end of all things.
