Description

Two dwarves who murdered Kvasir, the wisest being alive, and drained his blood into vats. They mixed it with honey and brewed the Mead of Poetry, the drink that grants the gift of verse to all who taste it.

Mythology & Lore

The Murder of Kvasir

In the Skáldskaparmál, Kvasir traveled the worlds sharing his wisdom until he accepted the hospitality of two dwarves. Fjalar and Galar killed him, drained his blood into two vats called Són and Boðn and a kettle called Óðrerir, mixed the blood with honey, and brewed the Mead of Poetry. When the gods asked what had become of Kvasir, the dwarves said he had choked on his own wisdom, finding no one clever enough to question him.

The Murder of Gillingr

The dwarves invited the giant Gillingr and his wife to visit. They took Gillingr out to sea and capsized his boat on a reef. He could not swim. He drowned. When his wife wept at the news, Fjalar offered to show her where her husband had died. As she passed through a doorway, Galar dropped a millstone on her head from above.

The Tidal Skerry

Gillingr's son Suttungr came for vengeance. He seized the dwarves and marooned them on a skerry that would vanish at high tide. Fjalar and Galar offered the Mead of Poetry to save their lives. Suttungr took it and carried it to his mountain hall Hnitbjörg. The dwarves kept their lives and lost everything they had killed for.
